Housing Program

State Street Housing Corporation
Since 1972 Respond, Inc. has worked through its affiliate, State Street Housing Corporation, to meet the urgent need of low-to-moderate income inner-city families for decent, safe, and affordable housing. During this period, we have provided more than 325 Camden residents with rental housing. We have also rehabilitated more than 100 houses and made them available for rental and home ownership.

Providing Decent Homes
Our mission is to provide the support services necessary for families to obtain decent affordable homes to live in and to help them attain home ownership. We purchase, renovate, manage, and maintain residual short-term rental real estate, ultimately giving time for families to purchase their own homes in Camden and the surrounding areas.

Building Stable Neighborhoods
State Street Housing Corporation maintains an average stock of approximately 50 single-family homes in Camden, some of which are undergoing renovation and some of which are being rented. Our goal is to move the properties to the private ownership of the families who live in them and in so doing to help these families build economic security through the equity value that grows in their homes, and to help increase family and community pride. Our aim is to help build a community of safe, secure and stable neighborhoods.

Encouraging Home Ownership
To help foster home ownership, we encourage all our renters to take part in a 12-week home ownership program that we run collaboratively with St. Joseph's Carpenter Society and other housing providers in the city. The program includes sessions not only on purchasing information, but also on family budgeting, savings, credit and financial planning, mortgage and settlement issues, home repair, maintenance, fire prevention, and evaluation of home repair contractors. At the close of the program, the staff works with qualified families to assist them in arranging for mortgages with local banks. State Street Housing Corporation continues to help residents after they become owners, by making friendly counseling and technical assistance available whenever it is needed for up to five years. In this way, we are actively encouraging our families to become owners of their own homes and helping them with any problems that may arise once they attain ownership.

Upcoming Projects
As part of the long-term vision of North Camden, State Street Housing Corporation is looking to build a senior development project of 60 potential units. These new units would enable seniors to age in place, linking seniors currently living in the neighborhood's stock of row homes with information about home repair and home modification programs, eldercare services, and counseling on reverse mortgages to allow elderly homeowners to remain in their homes as long as possible.
