Respond, Inc. is a charitable 501 (c) (3) organization created in 1967 by community residents to enhance and promote the economic independence and general welfare of individuals and families residing in Camden City and Camden County. We help people help themselves.
As part of its commitment to economic self-sufficiency, Respond offers job training programs in culinary arts, automotive technology, and lawn care and outdoor property maintenance.
Programs are located at The Sayre Training Complex New Worker Job Development Center at 8th and Erie streets. We have the capacity to serve more than 200 at-risk older youth and adult students annually, providing them with hands-on training and equipping them with the skills they need for employment. Our students include veterans, the formerly homeless and the formerly incarcerated, and we have a placement success rate of over 95 percent.
Respond owns and operates 10 childcare centers with the capacity to serve more than 1,000 children ranging in age from infants to 4 years old. Our infant center cares for over 200 infants and toddlers.
The centers offer comprehensive, high quality childcare that provides children with a sound educational beginning as well as access to health, social and community services with a strong focus on nutritional meals.
Licensed by the State of New Jersey, each center is staffed by an administrative director along with teachers certified in early childhood education and trained support staff. Bilingual staff members serve the needs of bilingual families.
Respond’s Summer Youth Employment Readiness Program prepares high school students for future employment opportunities by providing well-supervised work experiences in career-oriented jobs.
Students work part-time at area employers during the summer months and meet weekly for training sessions.
Students also have the opportunity to participate as volunteers with Respond helping in childcare centers, senior centers and summer camp.
Through our State Street Housing program, we purchase, renovate, manage and maintain decent, affordable properties for families who are interested in purchasing their own home in Camden.
To help foster home ownership, we encourage our renters to participate in a 12-week home ownership program that we run collaboratively with local financial institutions.
Respond operates a senior adult center in North Camden, offering programs, activities and events to enrich seniors’ lives and help them stay active and healthy.
Seniors are served a nutritious lunch each day and have access to health and social services.
Programs throughout the year may include computer workshops, exercise classes, art and music classes, and day trips to area attractions.
Seniors also have the opportunity to participate in our community garden, as well as our “Jobs for Seniors” initiative, designed to assist seniors who desire to work and find employment.
Our senior adult day programs are located at the Meadows at Pyne Poynt at 4th and Erie streets. Our programs are designed to prevent institutionalization, keeping seniors in their home of choice.
Through our PATH Homeless Day Center, we provide day shelter and essential services to homeless men, including veterans and the formerly incarcerated.
Either directly or by referral, we provide substance abuse counseling, HIV/AIDS counseling, life skills training, health and mental health services, employment counseling, housing counseling and placement, nutrition counseling, and literacy programs.
Clients have access to laundry facilities, showers, telephones, mail service, clothing and snacks.
